FAO Tulsa Meeting

August 10, 2010

For the next three months the Tulsa group will be meeting at All Souls Unitarian Church.  Fifteen members and two guest attended the August meeting of FAO Tulsa.  Both guests are joining the organization.

Announcements were made about a new group in Tulsa called Tulsa Modern Quilters, about upcoming classes to be taught by members Sally Bachman, Candace Kenyon-Dove and Kate Kline at various venues.  Current art exhibits in Tulsa include FAO members Sharyl Landis at Tulsa Artists Coalition and Michi Susan at the M.A. Doran Gallery.

There was a discussion about the upcoming FiberWorks 2011 show to be in Tulsa in June.  A sign-up sheet was passed for volunteers to help the Committee members.  Innovative publicity ideas were discussed.

A Tulsa members show in the future was proposed.

The usual Show and Tell portion of the meeting was merged with the program portion .  For August we asked members to bring a book that inspired our fiber art and, if possible, some artwork to demonstrate that inspiration.

Kate Kline brought Complex Cloth by Jane Dunnewold and showed three pieces made from her complex cloth made with techniques learned.

Jean Ann Fausser brought Head to Hand by David Levi Strauss which discussed where ideas come from.

Sharyl Landis brought the Fiberarts Design Book 4 and showed two pieces she used for inspiration and 2 pieces in her show.

Peggy Fry brought the Quilt National book and also talked about inspiration from Fabric Makes the Quilt by Roberta Horton.

One guest brought Needle Felting and indicated an interest in learning more about the technique.

Sue Hunsicker brought Found Object Art.

Virginia Vann brought Fabric Collage by Rosemary Eichorn and a lined, embellished jacket.

Candace Kenyon-Dover showed a fabric collage piece she made inspired by the Oklahoma City bombing.

Sally Bachman brought Anatomy for the Artist by Sara Simblet and showed how the book inspired her to work larger and give a more muscular look to her figures.

Sally also brought the Handweavers’ Pattern book and showed us a picture of overshot weaving and then showed a piece of antique overshot work from the 1800’s bought at an estate sale.

Rita Barnhart brought a new book called Paint & Stamp and another called Quilted Symphony with samples of her work.

Debbie Ross brought Thinking Outside the Block by Sandy Comings and showed 2 quilts inspired by the book.  She also brought Stitch ‘N Flip by Valary Wells and a silk piece done using the technique.

Sharon Thompson brought both Altered Photo and Piecing Pixels and showed a photo memory quilt she is making for Debi Pickens’ daughter’s wedding.

Debi Pickens brought Dream Landscapes illustrated by a landscape quilt made using techniques from the book.  She also brought The Creative Edge, The Art Quilt Workbook and Art Quilts Play, showing two more quilts.

Following the inspirational book program the members and guests went about the room talking to each other and looking up-close at the books and art works.

The next meeting will be on September 14 at All Souls Unitarian Church at 6:00 p.m.

Documentary about Grace Paley

March 16th, 2010 FAO No comments

Friends,

Next Sunday, March 21, we’re going to have the premier showing of a new documentary ‘Grace: A Profile of the Noted American Short-Story Writer, Poet, Educator and Political Activist…Grace Paley’ at the MWC Library, 8143 E. Reno in Midwest City. The library is only 20 minutes from OKC (really!), and will be well worth your drive. We’ll show the documentary at 3:00 and after will have a few readings of her poetry and as much discussion as participants want.

I’m excited about this great opportunity to learn more about one of our best writers and to share it with my friends. She was so good, and I hope you can join us to enjoy this small slice of her life/talents.
